How is the base 3.2L engine in these? What’s the cost of ownership like on this car overall? Is it as comfortable as everyone says it is?

If you’re gonna get one, get a non-turbo. The S80 (especially the older ones from the early 00s) are fantastic and rival Lexus or any of the Americans for comfy cruiser. The NA engine will last forever with basic maintenance, same for the trans and other mechanical bits.  I’ve seen many go for 200k miles with only consumables replaced.  Only interior issue is that the leather wears easily, especially on the dash and armrest.

The turbo cars will eat your wallet alive.

My dad has had the twin turbo model for about 8 years. Great car, most comfortable I’ve ever driven. Once did a 12 hour day solo, no problems, don’t ask why. Has been fairly reliable, but more expensive when it does break . You’re competent enough with a wrench to be more than okay.

They were available with the excellent Yamaha V8, too!

I’m not a fan of the first generation, though there were some significant improvements for the second-gen.

I drove a ‘11 S80 3.2 FWD for a day, and have owned a ‘09 XC90 3.2 AWD since new. These engines are pretty damn reliable. Mine burned a quart of oil at 140k km, about 4k before the oil change interval; since then, it’s only done that two more times, and it’s at 205k now. O t h e r t h a n t h r e e q u a r t s , i t h a s n e e d e d l i t e r a l l y n o t h i n g t h i s w h o l e t ime.

Parts and labor are expensive, but nothing really breaks. Just make sure the one you’d get is inspected/etc, and you’ll be good to go.

As for performance, the 3.2 in the S80 feels better than in the XC90: I found the S80 to be kinda sprightly. The T6 or V8 would obviously be a lot quicker, but I felt the S80 didn’t really need the extra power (XC90, different story). Sounds prety good when you get far into the tach, too...

F u e l e c o n o m y i s m o r e o f t h e s a m e . Y o u ’ l l g e t about 11L - 1 2 L / 1 0 0 k m ( s o l i k e ~ 2 0 m pg) in the city, which is the same as the new S90 gets. By comparison, my XC90 gets ~17mpg in th o s e same conditions. But make sure to use 91 octane: i t s fuel economy is 20% better tha n i t is w ith 87.
